One Week Old

The first week of your life was quite an eventful one.  Your favorite hobby so far is sleeping as evidenced by the photo below:

Due to my c-section we had to spend 4 days in the hospital.  On the first day, New Years Day, you got tons of visitors! Everyone loved holding you and couldn't believe how tiny you were.  Unfortunately, your circumcision was also that day so you were not very lively and also did not want to eat as well.  After you were conked out for 4 hours, you then starting crying alot.  I think you were in pain, which made me sad, but Dad could definitely relate with how bad you felt.  :)  Good thing the pain didn't seem to last too long as you were better by the next day!

You also failed your hearing test in both ears on the first day, so they had to come back and test it again on the second day.  Unfortunately, you still failed in your left ear but they think that is due to excess fluid so we have to schedule a follow up appointment for you when you are a month old to double check.

On Wednesday, you had several firsts as well.  It was the first time you peed straight up in the air while Dad was changing you.  LOL.  You also poohed your first yellow, seedy poop, which I am told is completely normal so good job! :)

I also met with a lactation consultant because I don't think you were eating correctly, and she gave me a nipple shield to use while you ate.  After I had that, and my milk came in, you were eating very well.  We also supplemented with my pumped breast milk as well since you lost 10% of your weight in the first few days and they wanted to make sure you were getting enough to grow big and strong.  While breastfeeding is definitely not a piece of cake,  I hope within the next couple weeks we start to get the hang of it!

Since I was recovering from surgery, your Dad was the master diaper changer, swaddler, holder, etc of you for the first few days.  It wasn't until Thursday that I was up and consistently moving around.  We still need to practice swaddling you but are getting the hang of it.

On Friday, after four long days in the hospital, we were able to come home.  After being delayed a little in the hospital, we left around 2:30pm.  It was a beautiful sunny day with snow covering the ground.  Our street was still a little icy and bumpy, but we made it! When we got home, I immediately put you in the crib and also tried the swing.  You liked both of them so I was happy!

Since for some reason I thought you were going to be bigger, we didn't have alot of newborn clothes for you to wear. Oops.  I promise I will go shopping next week to make sure your wardrobe is complete with many things to wear over the next month or so.

Our goal over the next few weeks is to fatten you up and get you back to your birth weight before your two week pediatrician appt.  At your first doctor appt on Saturday, Jan 5, you had gained 4 ounces since leaving the hospital, so we were very happy!

Grandma and Grandpa Lucas also visited on Friday and are going to stay for several days. It is great that they are here to help, and the bonus is that you always have someone to hold you while you sleep between feedings! They are so proud of you and love you very much!

You also experienced your first Bengals game.  Unfortunately, they lost (ugh), but you were cute in your jersey at least.  ;)

That pretty much sums up your first week on Earth.  You did so many things and we look forward to many more weekly updates to come!
